_Because it is about to rain, HIM and ME and HER have taken refuge in the lee of the great abandoned drive-in movie screen. HER leans on a speaker post. HIM is acting as if he’s trying to dig something out of the sole of his left tennis shoe (HIM never actually plays tennis). ME is feeling uncharacteristically frisky._
ME: Hey! I got a new toy. You guys want to play with it?
HER: Sure! HIM: Sure. _[but only because HER said “sure” first]_
ME: Check this shit out. Ask it a question. HER: Wh—
ME: No! I mean silently! To yourself. Everybody asks their own question, and it’s a secret. At least for this part.
_HIM kind of snickers & sneers at the same time._
HER: Oh. Okay. _[That smile, that smile appears again on her ghost of a face. HIM, poor sap, is lucky he didn’t see that.]_
_ME pauses, taking advantage of the built-in drama of an encroaching storm. His silly old fading black duster whips about in the wind. Finally, he spins the cube, lights the dial, flips the shit or whatever it is that makes it go this time, and the “answer” comes up:_
_TALK TO THE MAN ON DECK 7. HE’LL TELL YOU HOW TO GET TO THE CAFE. I DON’T KNOW. I HAVEN’T BEEN THERE FOR YEARS. DON’T KNOW ANYBODY_
_WHO HAS. NOW IF YOU’LL EXCUSE ME, I HAVE TO GET BACK TO WORK. IF I DON’T MOVE THESE HYDROPONICS MODULES OVER TO GREENHOUSE 33, WHO’S GOING TO? HUH? ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT, BUDDY? HUH?_
_THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT._
HIM: What the hell is the point of this? This is stupid.
_But HER has a strange look on her face._
