In a certain room a few steps below ground level, towards the front and to the right, was a place you had to squeeze through. If you were feeling very claustrophobic, forget it. It was a tight squeeze, and it would sort of close up around your ankles as you pushed your way through. Once in, however, it was a lot like any other middle school. There were hallways, different wings for different grades, you had to know your schedule, there was a vague sense of disapproval in the air. I was in there for a while, sort of half knowing what I was doing, and then I came out, Somehow it was a different time on the inside than it was on the out- side. Like a whole different scale of time. I kind of wanted to, or felt like I should, go back inside, but then I turned around and looked at that narrow squeezeway again, and it was getting winter-dark out, and I just couldn't quite bring myself to do it.
