On the world where the Moth's Wing was built, some seven and a half eons ago, elevators had quite a lot of significance. If you dream you're in an elevator, especially one that goes sideways or in some odd direction rather than simply up or down, you can be pretty sure that some creature from that world is trying to contact you, or trying to lead you somewhere. Go with it. Ride the elevator, and don't be afraid. Fear kills interstellar travel like nothing else. And interstellar travel is essential to good communication. And good communication is, as we all know, essential to bloody everything, including a prudent schedule of elevator repair, which the Moth's Wing has lacked for several generations. Therefore when the Captain, the Science Officer, and the Medical Officer step through the irising portal of Elevator 301B, they find, instead of a nice floor, or even some walls with the usual array of buttons on them, a vacuous space that proves more than willing to whisk them, in cahoots with gravity, toward the planet they are (fortunately, probably due to the lack of a qualified pilot or navigator) orbiting rather more closely than standard protocol would dictate.
