the guest house is on the water--no, literally ON the water. and it doesn't have a floor. but it does have a "carpet" of little green dots kind of like duck weed, so it LOOKS like a floor. which I guess is pretty dangerous when you think about it.
Anne got back from someplace and we were already there. I was all kissing and stroking and holding, and she was totally neutral/aloof/cool until I stopped, feeling babyish and foolish. On the deck/porch behind the main house she said, “See this is so great, this way I get to see Evan for six months of the year, and you for six months of the year,” and it kind of burned, but I didn’t react outwardly. I asked if she wanted me to swim over and get the boat to take her to the guest house (there were these two docks about 50 feet from the house, and one had a little boat; the gues house was maybe 100 feet past that) and she emphatically said No! she wanted to swim. I took longer than anyone to get the stuff out of my pockets before jumping in. I did a nice long shallow dive but said kind of to her as I was skimming the water, “Oh no, I forgot my hat!” and she kinda chuckled, this time more like a peer and less like indulgently or patronizingly, so that felt a little bit good. It was the Mack cap. I turned it around backwards so I could swim.
Someone like Megan was telling all about their trip in the guest house. Dad and Ruth were there too. Everyone including Anne was on the double bed except me. I was treading water. The Megan person sang “What’s so bad about potential, baby,” and had just recently fixed up a misunderstanding with Ruth, and was therefore OK telling about their trip. Someone else, part kid part sibling, got up from the bed and forgot there was no floor, and sputtered and went under, and I went under to help them up, and it wasn’t quite easy, and I was remembering stuff I’d read about how a drowning person will climb right up you and send you down. But it was OK. I got us both back over by the bed. They coughed, recovering, and coughed up tiny dots of blood, and so some of the “duck weed” dots were red now. I said, you know, I had just been thinking that that would happen, like if you slept here and got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or something....
There was some kind of advertisement for a cruise ship of some kind, with a hot tub on it, on the inside wall next to the window. The cruise ship evidently came right to this guest house to pick people up. Or maybe it just used to. Couldn’t tell for sure. It was sunny outside, and the water was bigger, greyer, saltier. I kind of wanted to swim out there and look around, but kind of not.
