I was at a high school, slightly dim lighting, crowded hallway just like at MHSA, but more so. A class was letting out. This one black guy was my acquaintance/friend--close cut hair, neat appearance, open, friendly face. This other black guy, slightly more woolly looking and hard-eyed, was accusing me of being racist. He was personally offended by me for some reason. I was honestly trying to find out whyI also asked my friend, partly through eye contact and gesture, but he said we would have to work it out for ourselves. I kept asking, "What did I do to you?" but couldn't get an answer. I was frustrated but open to the fact that I may not have been completely innocent. I really wanted to know myself and what these young men were thinking. The issue was out in the open, and we didn't explode. When I woke up I had a feeling of honor and strength that I had lived through that situation, and maybe in the future I'll be able to build on that.
