I was a dolphin. Or rather, I was a human getting to play a virtual dolphin for a time, for as long as it took to tell or experience a certain story. I was bobbing in an azure sea near a vibrant port city. A tragic love drama was unfolding before me. A female human was renouncing because of her sense of duty the male human she loved. It was taking place on board a ship, right outside the bay. She was tall, tawny and lissome. He was deep brown, noble and solemn. When it was done and he had gone, she cast her gold necklace into the water where I caught it with my long nose! Instantaneously we travel several years into the humans' future.... (The aspect of this dream which is a movie has replaced the black man with a white actor, a detail which peeves me.) I still have the necklace. At the beginning of the scene, I tell myself I do not quite remember why I have it, whom it belongs to. But I am swimming toward them. He is standing on a craggy jetty. She is drawing near. Her time of servitude is over. Has it been too many years? Have there been too many fatigues, too little love, too much business? Will they still want each other? Has everything decayed? I swim closer, ready to reveal the sparkling necklace, and let it do its magic! While I'm waiting for the woman's arrival, I swim around, enjoying being a dolphin, enjoying how long I can stay under between breaths. I surface, take in the cityscape in an instant, wonder if anyone sees my sleek head above the wavelets, then disappear again, enjoying weightlessness.
