I was shopping for jeans at Kmart with Elaine and Jerry from Seinfeld. (At first my identity wavered between myself and Elaine, but later I settled into myself.) Elaine wanted to know how the jeans looked on her. I told her my opinion and she agreed with me that they looked good. But whenever she asked Jerry, and he said they looked good, she denied it, insisting that they were too short because they didnt come down over her feet enough. I figured out as she went back and forth between us (Good? looking back at me and then Feet? gesturing over at Jerry) that she did this because from me she wanted an honest opinion but from him she wanted compliments by way of denial of her expressed doubts. Later, at a traffic light driving home, I could hear the subtext inside Jerrys head, and he was all worried that he had made her feel bad. And now its just hanging there on the end of the couch like a ----, he said of his real or imagined faux pas.
