I was returning from somewhere. Autumnal sunshine. Hills, the unseen proximity of great water. I was on my bicycle, but didnt need to steer. Instead, I held on to the window frame of a Geo Tracker like Anns but with a stout, redbearded guy driving. He had a passenger, female I think. He pulled me along at 40, 45, 50 mph! I said, Wahooo!!! Then, Youre not going to do anything really horrible to me are you? He kinda smiled and said no. He slowed down when we got to the beginning of a dirt and rock path/road. I thought to ride along it, but riding now meant scooting along on my ass and I was getting my trenchcoat all dusty, so I just stood up and walked instead. I passed the driver, he and his always peripherally seen woman (lean, leathered, long straight dark hair) were getting ready to set up a campsite at a little dusty clearing by the road. He stretched bigly. I murmured a greeting in passing.. There were other such sites, among the trees and pine trees, and some of them might also have been occupied. The air was clear, it seemed both night and day at once. I emerged from the main path and the treeline at the same time. There was the great body of water, clear, black, blue, grey, a fine line of foam where it lapped hugely, quietly against the thin strand of sand beach. It was twilight or dawn. I passed a branching of the path, thought, thats probably it, went on along the lake shore a ways anyhow, until the path definitely turned into randomness, dead leaves. It went uphill that way, towards maybe some peoples homes. I went back to the original branch. It led back among trees. I looked down, Ah yes! This is it! Because here were the oodles and scads of blue leaves I had left here before, carpeting the path, blue perhaps vinyl leaves, each with one of the three types of sassafrass leaves drawn on it, in black magic marker, and each also with a black magic markerd arrow, pointing back the way from which I had come. I picked up one of each kind of leaf--now it was apparent they were not all exactly the same shade of blue, some were intense, some faded, and they were not all exactly the same size--to take back to give to Kate. This path led me to a low door, going through which I bumped my knee on something and said, Fuck! I was now behind the bar in a low-rent tavern Id been to before. But it was night, and the tavern was closed now. To my immediate left and on the counter were a shotglass, an ashtray, some other bar-like detritus, all lit by the liquid gold of incidental nighttime left-on and window light. The counter was weathered, smoky, dark old wood. In here I also found the rumpled bed room of the proprietor, a man Id met before. He didnt appear to be home. Feeling slightly apologetic, I looked around for how to get out of here, through here to the place I could continue my journey. It seemed to be merely a matter of unlocking several decrepit locks on the offwhite painted wood door, and going out. I wondered briefly whether, then decided it was unlikely that, he had an alarm system. Hes too poor to have an alarm!
