1st hour I was upstairs in the tech center—a slick curved help desk, adobe certification, sci fi ergonomic chairs with speakers, kids clicking away on chromebooks phones and tablets, making apps—
2nd hour I’m down in the tech department—woodshop, autos, metals—kids in boots and camo swearing and doing cabinetry book work with stubs of pencils on ragged-edged notebook paper—
I was thinking Eloi vs Morlock, but the notion of who's eating whom is a bit more twisted up than that.
Anyway, we still need both. You can’t have the gleaming glass and chrome without the grease and gears. But there’s a kind of enforced trait-set dichotomy that reminds me of gender stereotypes, complete with one type being undervalued despite in many ways being stronger.
