at bedtime i told libby then millie "I had fun watching you play today." I didn't try to tell them what moves they should practice, or what their teams needed to work on, or what tactics they should try in tomorrow's games, or make excuses for why they lost every game today. "I had fun watching you play." And then I listened for like a freaking hour to Megan's churning, beautiful, adolescent transformations; she talked and talked and is becoming wise & insightful and I haven't seen her wheels spinning this fast with this much concurrent learning since she was a tiny infant, swinging herself to sleep beside our blowup mattress on the floor. And while I was listening, I got a big dose of what parenting really is. "I had fun watching you play."
