you absolutely have to read old stuff too. even though archetypes, yada yada, stories get retold, it’s the essence that counts, writers use each other’s stuff and myths get recycled, YES BUT: you have to be able to draw on outdated materials because there might be something severely limited or dangerous or fucked up about the groupthink of today’s interpretations of all those essential, recurring ideas!
