A summery, breezy day. The girls fail to fly a cheap kite they got from the TC ice cream social. I walk around the Circle to relieve my frustration from Megan’s inability to hear criticism about doing the laundry and leaving the clothes wet. While walking, I see a big green bag blowing across someone’s yard. On the other side of the circle, I see it again, and step carefully over someone else’s hostas to pick it up. It’s actually the remains of one of those Chinese floating lantern thingies. I cut through the backyard and tie the kite string to it. It kind of flies almost, but it doesn’t actually go in the direction of up. Right around supper time (sourdough grilled cheese & lettuce from the little semicircle garden), a sudden shift in the wind brings interesting clouds from the west. Then big, ropy rain hits. The car is soaked; I’m soaked getting the car into the garage. It rains for a while, cooling everything off, and then the sun comes out and there’s a rainbow. Lib & Cel & the neighbor girls & their mom go out on the back patios to marvel & take cel phone pics of it. When it starts to fade, Libby blows kisses and says, “Goodbye, rainbow!” (2016)
