> I want my assessments to allow for and encourage the unexpected. An organic, creative approach to assessment should reflect the rapidly shifting, information-rich landscape that our students are expected to navigate. If our goal is to foster resourcefulness and innovation, then our curriculum should allow and encourage our students to come up with solutions that we did not preconfigure for them. Copy and pasting and the constant “mashing up” of information is an unavoidable feature of our current intellectual and cultural environment; I want to learn ways to embrace that reality, and facilitate my students’ self-directed discovery of new ways to gather, synthesize, and demonstrate knowledge, rather than, for instance, merely memorizing and reproducing the same old essays that can already be found ad nauseam all over the Internet.
It’s funny cuz it’s partly jargonized bullshit, but partly true!
