For those (which is almost all, I’ll wager) of us who are not inventors of wheels, the task (and game) at hand today is: **Find new, tricky, surprising, accidental, awesome, humane ways to use wheels.** Perfect example: the [Sans Bullshit Sans][1] font. Uses the OpenType font technology (invented by someone else, who surely benefitted from previous inventions by other people as well) for ligatures—but instead of just replacing for instance “fl” with a single glyph, it replaces whole words—annoying buzzwords—with “a Comic Sans-styled censorship bar.” A product is cool, a tool is cooler. Especially when people find uses for the tool that its creators never intended or even imagined. This reminds me of the distinction between a camera’s being for “taking pictures of things” vs “capturing photons.” [1]: http://www.sansbullshitsans.com
