Look. So much of the time we have it like I give you a reading and all but tell you what you're going to read (philosophical spoilers), then you come to class and I ask you a question and after you flounder around for a second making cute references to random dumb things, I tell you the answer to the question. The circle is closed.
What if instead it was more like we all do the reading and then come to class and if nobody else asks a question then I will but either way, anyone can answer it and there may not be an answer at hand but we might find something to talk about and when I don't know the prepackaged answer to something that comes up (because we've practiced having it be so that things can come up) I won't pretend that I do. I've sworn off bullshitting, so you don't have to sit there acting like students and I don't have to sit there acting like a teacher—we're all spared the ignominious politeness of that boring nightmare—and if no one knows the answer then bingo! We just invented a new assignment.
