# notes on that irritating equity team discussion the other day jen l-p said “I wish there was a different term besides ‘privilege’ because that sounds like I’m doing something bad to someone else; it raises people’s hackles; if we had a different term we could have a better conversation.” If there’s a new term, then that term will become the one that raises hackles. Not only that, but hackles must be raised. If we’re having a nice cozy “conversation” over some hot cocoa and no bad feelings, our conversation is worse than useless because it’s giving us the dopamine or whatever the fuck that makes us think we’re being good non-racists, but we’re really just sitting there jerking each other off, providing guilt theater and putting on enlightened makeup, while being deeply, secretly relieved that nothing’s really going to change any time soon. Who are these “people” whose hackles you speak of anyway, Jen? Jason lifted up the *White Fragility* book sometime during this convo with a laugh and said that this is what it is about. Might have to check that one out. Then maybe go back and add a comment here: https://padlet.com/jmeinen/l9vl2neqngzr
