- Get better at math &/or programming - and learn a little genuine humility #PDP - Tell yourself the story of the color scheme grading matrix & Michelle coming back with a spreadsheet macro that does most of the grade entry for you - Yes it’s a good example of the XY Problem, but it’s more than that. - i suppose the classic example is making faster horses vs making cars or something? or you could look at this: http://xyproblem.info - It’s also an example of that guy in the river in hell who landed there because he assumed everyone else was a fool but him - It’s also a warning about how you talk to and condescend to your students - It’s also a reminder of capoeira and karate and softball and the stick on the sidewalk with Katy - It’s a reminder that if you’re saying “so and so should grow the fuck up” about anyone, then so-and-so is YOU. - likewise if you’re saying “I need to have empathy for my students,” you should probably start by cultivating some empathy for yourself. - It’s also living proof that “there are no stupid questions” is true; but simultaneously a reminder that stupid questions don’t come without risk (have empathy for your avid students, etc) - The 100% best thing a teacher can do is be willing to learn - Teaching and learning is like writing and reading - Look at Michelle’s last email in the convo: It’s also an example of serendipity & human communication (i told her about Keyboard Maestro and she was excited about that) - It’s also an example of starting where you are, with whatever’s on your mind; how that can lead to collaboratively making things better with a butterfly effect; you never know where it’s going to lead you! THAT SHOULD BE HOW TUTORIALS WORK. - get a computer-related certification - like that one you missed the opportunity to do before, the collegiate study or whatever that they offered that you didn’t go to because of schedule conflicts. Schedule conflicts!! Fucking make it work, next time something like that comes along!
